new years smileThe New Year is here! We all have our New Year’s Resolutions that we make at the start of each year. At Windsor Smiles, our Brisbane dental practice wants you to have a beautiful smile for the New Years! Here are some tips that will get you to the best start for a healthy new smile and a healthier you.

Cut Down on Soft Drinks

Soft drinks are sugary drinks full of acid and additives. The sugars and acids dissolve tooth enamel, causing cavities in your teeth. Even the diet versions are bad for you, with acids and artificial sweeteners. When you drink a lot of soft drinks or acidic drinks (even orange juice), they can cause irreparable damage to your teeth. The photo below shows just how much tooth has been eroded away from drinking soft drinks. This will result in the need for getting fillings or porcelain veneers for your teeth, to restore the damage done. tooth erosion

Not only does soft drink cause cavities to form in your teeth, but they also make your teeth yellower and less attractive in colour. Although Brisbane teeth whitening can improve the colour of the teeth, the best way to keep your pearly whites pearly and white, is to drink less soft drink!

So try to cut down this year on the amounts of soft drinks and fizzy drinks that you consume. If you do drink soft drink, have a good rinse with water after drinking. This cuts down on the damaging effects that the acid can have on your teeth.

Eat less Sugary Treats candy

Sugary foods are tasty and delicious. However they can be quite damaging to your health, by increasing the risk of tooth decay. Sugars have been linked to many health issues such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The sugars in lollies and candies break down, and attack your teeth which can cause cavities in the teeth. Cutting down on these foods will help you reduce the rate of tooth decay.

Better Dental Hygiene

Many of us know the right things to do, but we just don’t do them! Brushing twice a day and flossing is common knowledge, but often dismissed by many of us. We often say that “we don’t have the time” or often forget. However now that the New Year is upon us, it is time to re-commit to your oral health and look after your teeth. Prevention is better than the cure!

Stop Smoking

Smoking is horrible for your dental hygiene. Not only is smoking harmful to your lungs, with clear links to cancer. Smoking also causes many dental problems, such as gum disease and staining of the teeth. Moderate to severe gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and is highly exacerbated by smoking cigarettes.
